Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has held discussions with the Chief Ministers of all seven provinces, reaching a common understanding to cooperate in creating a conducive environment for the elections scheduled for Falgun 21.
Chief Ministers Commit to Federal–Provincial Coordination
According to the Prime Minister’s secretariat, the chiefs of all provinces expressed readiness to work in coordination with the federal government to ensure a peaceful and credible election. They welcomed the Prime Minister’s initiative to hold dialogue with political parties and stakeholders.
Peace and Security Identified as Major Challenge
The provincial leaders stressed that maintaining law and order remains the biggest concern ahead of the polls. They stated that elections can only be held on time if all three tiers of government act with “mutual cooperation, coordination and coexistence.”
Karnali Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel said:
“We are not against elections. The federal government must act to build an environment, and our role should not be ignored. The solution now is elections.”
Call for Relief, Reconstruction and Policy Clarity
The Chief Ministers suggested that the federal government introduce a special package for the reconstruction of structures damaged during the Gen-G protests. They also raised concerns over the government’s recent spending-cut circular, arguing it appeared to undermine provincial authority.
Madhesh Province Chief Minister Jitendra Prasad Sonar demanded relief for farmers affected by drought and heavy rain, while others questioned the impact of cutting off electricity lines to industries with unpaid dues, warning of economic and employment losses.
Prime Minister Reaffirms Election Commitment
Prime Minister Karki reiterated that the government is working to build the necessary environment for the upcoming election and intends to hand over power to an elected government after the vote.
She stated that maintaining good governance and conducting elections are the main duties of the current administration, and that she is prepared to face criticism in the process.
